Assumptions used in this estimate
  • Annual-liability estimate: taxes are figured on $65,000 of yearly pay and divided by 26 pay periods. Employers withhold using IRS Publication 15-T and your W-4, so actual paychecks can differ.
  • Filing status Single; federal standard deduction $16,100.
  • Kansas tax starts from federal adjusted gross income.
  • Personal exemptions of $9,160 deducted (dependents = children entered).
Not modeled for Kansas (4)
  • Kansas Social Security subtraction modification: all Social Security benefits included in federal AGI are fully subtracted from Kansas AGI (for all income levels, no phase-out) — this significantly reduces taxable income for retirees
  • Kansas Earned Income Credit
  • Kansas Homestead refund and property tax relief
  • Kansas schedule of modifications to federal AGI (military retirement, certain retirement income, etc.)

How the Kansas estimate is calculated

  1. Start from federal adjusted gross income — wages minus traditional 401(k) and Section 125 deductions.
  2. Subtract the Kansas standard deduction for your filing status. Subtract personal exemptions (dependents = the number of children you enter).
  3. Apply the brackets.
  4. Divide the annual total by your number of paychecks.

What this Kansas calculator does not model

  • Kansas Social Security subtraction modification: all Social Security benefits included in federal AGI are fully subtracted from Kansas AGI (for all income levels, no phase-out) — this significantly reduces taxable income for retirees
  • Kansas Earned Income Credit
  • Kansas Homestead refund and property tax relief
  • Kansas schedule of modifications to federal AGI (military retirement, certain retirement income, etc.)

Data notes

  • Kansas tax rates of 5.2% / 5.58% confirmed from Kansas Notice 24-08 and the KW-100 withholding guide. Per Notice 24-08, K.S.A. 79-32,110 was amended to provide these rates 'for tax year 2024, and all tax years thereafter'. Rates unchanged for 2026.
  • Bracket thresholds: $23,000 (single/HOH/MFS) and $46,000 (MFJ) are Kansas TAXABLE INCOME thresholds (after standard deduction AND personal exemption). First $23,000/$46,000 of taxable income is taxed at 5.2%; excess at 5.58%.
  • Standard deduction (confirmed from Notice 24-08): $3,605 (single), $8,240 (MFJ), $6,180 (HOH). Effective for tax year 2024 and all subsequent years.
  • Personal exemption (deduction): $9,160 single/MFS, $18,320 joint, plus $2,320 per dependent (K.S.A. 79-32,121). Head of household gets an additional $2,320 (HB 2231, 2025) = $11,480. FIXED: previous file used $9,160 for HOH.
  • Additional $2,250 exemption for qualified disabled veterans remains available but not modeled here.
  • Kansas starts from federal AGI with Kansas-specific modifications (Kansas AGI).
  • SB 269 (2025) revenue trigger did not produce a rate cut for 2026 (Notice 25-06); 2026 legislation changed credits/subtractions only (2026 Legislative Changes summary).
