Editorial policy

Tax content affects people’s money. These are the rules The TakeHome Tax Desk follows for every calculator, dataset and guide on TakeHome.

Sourcing

  • Tax figures come only from official publishers: IRS revenue procedures, publications and forms; the Social Security Administration; state revenue, taxation and labor departments; and city or county finance departments.
  • Every figure in our datasets records its source URL and the date we read it. Secondary sources may explain context but never supply numbers.
  • If an official 2026 figure is not yet published, we say so, mark the data as low confidence, and show that note on the page. We never present an old year’s number as current.

Accuracy and consistency

  • All calculators run on one tested engine. Figures in explainers, worked examples and FAQs are generated from that engine and our datasets when the site is built, rather than typed by hand.
  • Every result lists its assumptions and the items it does not model, so readers can judge whether the estimate fits their situation.
  • We say “estimate” where we estimate, and we explain the difference between paycheck withholding and the tax you finally owe.

Independence

TakeHome is funded by display advertising. Advertisers have no say over our numbers, methods or wording, and we don’t accept payment to recommend tax products.

Corrections

If you find an error, contact us with the page and, ideally, the official source. We check reports against the source, fix confirmed errors promptly and update the review date on affected pages.

Updates

We refresh all datasets every January for the new tax year and whenever a state or federal change takes effect mid-year. See the methodology page for the full list of sources.

Not tax advice

Our content is general information and estimates, not tax, legal or financial advice. For your specific situation, consult a qualified tax professional.
